Nanda Devi Trekking season in indian himalayas :
Spread over a width of an average 250 kms the weather varies dramatically over
different regions. The weather in the subcontinent is almost entirely dependent
on the ‘monsoons’, winds blowing from the southwest of India and the adjacent
areas bringing heavy rainfall in the continent, typically in the months of June
to September.
Summer, mid March to end June, known as
the pre-monsoon season is the one of the
best time to trek and climb as there are long days of nice, pleasant weather.
The snow lines are quite low early on in this season as the winter snow just
starts to melt.
Monsoon, early July to Mid September, is
when the entire country (except the Trans Himalayas – Lahaul Spiti in Himachal
and Ladakh) is drenched with rain water and covered with thick envelope of
clouds. Perfect time to be in the TransHimalayan land as it wakes up after a
long cold winter.
Autumn, the
post- monsoon season starts by late September and carries on till end
November. Since everything is washed out in the monsoons and it is relatively
cooler this period offers clear views of the mountain ranges.
Winter is quite severe all across the
Himalayas, especially in the higher reaches. It generally arrives by early
December and continues till mid March. Good time to be in the Lesser Himalayas
to get the starkling clear distant views

NANDA DEVI TREKKING IN HIMALAYA |
Nanda Devi Trek Duration: 19 Days
Nanda Devi is the highest mountain situated completely within India. |
A classic trek that
retraces the pioneering steps of Shipton and Tilman through the Garhwal
Himalaya. The Nanda Devi basin must surely
be one of the most legendary regions in the entire Himalayan chain. The mountain
itself, revered since time
immemorial by all those who live in its shadow, has long attracted the
attention of the pioneering
mountaineers and explorers, mystics and spiritualists, writers and everyday
travellers who have visited the area.
This classic trek
takes us across the picturesque meadows and valleys that border the western edge
of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. The route we follow was used by Shipton and Tilman
on their amazing journey to the Nanda Devi basin. During the trek there are many
views of the surrounding peaks and the Kuari Pass (3658m) itself has an
unrivalled panorama of the Great Himalayan peaks including Nanda
Devi (7816m), Changabang (6864m), Doonagiri (7066m) and Kamet
(7756m).
This amazing feat
of endurance and determination was capped when Tilman later returned to conquer
the peak itself. Sadly, the
mystic of the area led to an excess of expeditions and ecological damage and the
Sanctuary was
closed in the
1980's. Investigations are currently underway to assess the
recovery.

TREKKING DETAILS.... |
02 DELHI/NAINITAL (1938 m)
Drive 303 km/8 hr. Nainital is a hill station set around Naini Lake,
named after Naina (eyes) of Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife. It is
believed that emerald lake is one of the green eyes of her.
Overnight in guest house/hotel.
03 NAINITAL
In the morning we make an excursion to Naina Peak also known as
China Peak (2610 m) from where we have a glimpse of Himalayan peaks
including Nanda Devi (7826 m). Nanda Devi is the highest peak of
Kumaon. Later in the afternoon drive around other lakes of Nainital
like Bhimtal, Sat Tal and Naukuchia Tal. 'Tal' means Lake in Hindi
language. During summer months Nainital is a popular Hill Resort.
04 NAINITAL/DEBAL (1218 m)
Drive approximately 182 km to Debal via Kausani and Gwaldam. En
route we will enjoy the scenic beauty of terraced fields, villages
and snow clad Himalayan mountains At distant horizon we can still
see Nanda Devi sometime en route and also Trishul and other peaks.
O/N in tents.
05 DEBAL/MANDOLI/DIDINA (2439 m)
Drive 24 km/1-1/2 hrs. on the rough road to Mandoli by jeep . Then
we start our trek to Didina village. First 1-1/2 hours almost
levelled walk through villages then steep ascent till Didina
village. 4/5 hr trek. O/N Tents.
06 DIDINA/PATHAR NACHUNI (3658 m)
Today is a steep trek through oak trees and bamboo shrubs up to Ali
Bugyal. From here we walk over Ali Bugyal enjoying the view of
Hima-ayan peaks till we arrive Bedni Bugyal. Bugyal means meadow in
Garhwali dialect. From Bedni Bugyal we can have a view of Mt. Nanda
Ghunti, Trishul massif and also peaks on the north of Garhwal. We
continue our trek to Pathar Nachuni where we stay in tents for
night. 5/6 hr.
07 PATHAR NACHUNI/BHAGWABASA (4267 M)/ROOP KUND (4800 m)/PATHAR
NACHUNI (3658 m)
Today's trek is also steep. During the months of August to October
the valley is full of fragrance of Saussurea Obvallata flower,
locally known as Brahmkamal. This flower acquires special importance
to make offerings to Gods, especially to Lord Shiva and is found
only in certain places in high altitudes. After touching the flower
by hand, the smell lasts for hours. 7/8 hr trek.
In Roopkund human skeletons of 500 - 600 years old are found. There
are several beliefs about the mystic presence of these skeletons.
Some say refugees fleeing from prosecution of Tuglak's army under
General Zorawar Singh died here on the way. Others believe traders
from Tibet might have died in a natural calamity. Yet another belief
is that King Jasdal of Kanauj was on his way with his wife
undertaking a pilgrimage called, „Nanda Jat" to propitiate Goddess
Nanda Devi 560 years ago. The Queen delivered a child on the way.
This made the Goddess Nanda Devi angry by spoiling Her Holy Land. A
snow storm was sent down by the Goddess killing hundreds on the
trail of pilgrimage. According to the artefacts recovered so far
this explanation of "Nanda Jat" seems more viable. Yet curiosity is
unsatiated to find reason for this mystery .
08 PATHAR NACHUNI/ KUNOL (2186 m)
Today we trek for some time over the ridge enjoying the superb
closer view of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks and then we trek down
to Kunol village. 6/7 hr trek.
09 KUNOL/DEKHNADHAR(2100 m)
We trek through beautiful remote villages. First 3 hrs. steep down
till the village Sitail. We cross Nandakini river. Sitail is a small
village with few shops . From Sitail 2hrs. steep climb to Dekhnadhar.
Overnight in Tents. 5/6 hr.
10 DEKHNADHAR/RAMNI (2200 m)
Trek through villages which gives us a chance to see the local
people engaged in various day to day activities. This is easy trek
with little up and down. Overnight in tents. 4/5 hr.
11 RAMNI/JHENJI (1524 m)
Trek through beautiful forest, sometimes with a nice view of snow
peaks. It is uphill trek for first 2 hrs till Binayak top. We can

12 JHENJI/PANA (2448 m)

of wildlife. After ˝ hr. we reach at Syaartoli from where we can see
the view of Kuari Pass. Kuari Pass means "door way". Then trek goes
down to Doma Bheti. From this point it is very steep climb till
Kuari pass. Blinding view of snow peaks rewards for all our efforts
to reach the top. Many high peaks of Garhwal can be seen from here.
